Uncle BOB, Thomas (Master Gohring), Denver (Bartender)
and Kyle Clubb (February Winner)

Things got a little out of hand...

Things got a little out of hand with Kyle Clubb. He was the February winner of 250 dollars worth of gift cards from Kick Butt Coffee. Apparently though, that wasn't good enough. He had to punch one of our bartenders, Denver. Kyle better watch out. Why? Because Brandy (the manager) is going to TAKE HIM OUT!!!! (video clip)

Talk about Keeping Austin Weird. Kyle Clubb (the one throwing the punch) was born in Austin in 1977 (I didn't think weird meant punching Denver). Mr. Clubb teaches Windows Programming and Administration at Austin Community College. (I get it. He's a PC and Denver is a Mac, pwnd!) He owns a web consulting business. Wife and 3 kids. Currently finishing religious studies degree at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Never leaves the toilet lid up; still married. Grew up in Austin at a house that is currently the frozen food section of the Cedar Park Walmart. Last winning of anything was season passes to Astroworld in Houston 16 years ago. Addicted to coffee, hummus and Dots. He's thankful that students have a proximal (yes, he said proximal) coffee shop to help them stay awake for his classes. Congratulations to you Kyle Clubb!

Hope you enjoyed finding out about this months winner. Next month could be you (see down below). Meanwhile, I look forward to bumping into you at one of the Kick Butt Coffees.

Who would you treat if you won?

Dear Thomas (Master Gohring) You ask who I would want to treat to Kick Butt Coffee.  It is a pleasure to consider this question:

  • I would treat the Dalai Lama to Kick Butt coffee because that much cool on Kick Butt would save the world.
  • Then I would give President Obama a big Americano because it could help him quit smoking and things have got to be stressful for him.
  • Then I would have a BIG party and give Kick Butt to all my friends and then get out the waterhose for a big Spring Break water fight.
  • Then I would go to all the crack houses and give them Kick Butt Coffee so they could feel better and get off drugs.  Its mind-altering and its legal!

I feel better just writing to you about it.

Sincerely jazzed,

Claire Lewis, ACC (Cafe AM 4 shots)

Master Gohring:

My favorite part of these monthly winners is the fact that each is completely unique and shows how each keeps Austin weird by going to Kick Butt. Whether its the employees or visitors, everytime I go, I meet someone very obscure and offbeat. I'm so glad the Triangle has you and not some other stuck-up coffee shop.

To answer your question, I would definitely treat my coffee-addicted friends first (most of em RTF majors). Sharing a Kick Butt is another one of those little gifts to the world.

Thanks for asking,

Liz Moore

Kick Butt Coffee, Java and
Martial arts: the perfect blend

by Lindsey Mullikin

WHILE CHATTING WITH A BANK TELLER about the lack of coffee shops along Airport Boulevard, Thomas Gohring came up with what he thought was a kick-butt idea. Merging his love of martial arts (he also owns Master Gohring's Tai Chi & Kung Fu ) with the community's need for a little pick-me-up, he opened Kick Butt Coffee [February 2008] and then Kick Butt Coffee in The Triangle [July 2009]. Red walls, nunchucks, bamboo and oriental fans illustrate the business' ties to martial arts. The shop, which serves coffee, smoothies, pizza, breakfast frittatas, sandwiches, wine, beer and liquor, has round, cozy booths, a giant plasma screen TV and a Wii gaming system.

Amenities at the new 2nd location include a giant projection screen, a swimming pool and a Wii.

But Gohring wanted to build more of a nighttime business with a full bar as well. He asked his sister Joy, a stand-up comedian, to help start a weekly open mic night, and Kick Butt Comedy was born. The small coffee shop even opened its stage to over a 100 out-of-town musicians, including John Biz, Aim Low Kid and Christpher Denny, during South by Southwest. Gohring built off that music foundation with a weekly blues dance night , weekly open mic music, monthly Jazz Jam, and monthly belly dancing and drumming as well as regular hip-hop shows and rock concerts. While martial arts, coffee, comedy and music events may seem like random patchwork, it's all tied together with a single thread, Gohring explains. "It kind of boils down to one question that we ask ourselves every step of the way: Is it kick-butt?"

Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting

by Laura Hensley

Thomas Gohring teaches his Kung Fu and Tai Chi students that energy, like fire, seeks something to burn. Gohring's students harness their energy by kicking, sparring and meditating. Gohring, a sixth-degree black sash master of Kung Fu, burns off his energy in other ways.

The 37-year-old fireball is always seeking his next challenge--whether it is opening his own Kung Fu and Tai Chi school or building his own coffee shop from scratch.

The native Austinite first began Kung Fu when he was 14, and eventually took over mentoring new students in his teachers' classes. He began teaching Kung Fu professionally in his backyard, and opened his own school on Airport Boulevard in 1996.

"Watching Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies (as a kid) I thought. 'I want to do that,' " Gohring says, "But after a year or so training, there was some talent noticed in me. Not necessarily for my capabilities in martial arts, but for my capabilities in communicating. I've now learned to call it tuning in to what's going on with someone."

It's that intuitiveness and passion that has set Gohring and his school apart. "He's identified that people learn in different ways," says Mary Grabhorn, an Assistant Instructor at Master Gohring's school. "He has a talent for very politely and concisely making a student feel comfortable."
Gohring says that people seek out Kung Fu and Tai Chi for various reasons. Some enjoy the physical fitness and meditative outlet it provides. Others are admittedly in it for the thrill of learning how to weild nunchucks.

But no matter their motives, Master Gohring's school (which includes four instructors) helps them all, with a special focus on beginners and people with learning difficulties or physical handicaps. Some 200 students, ranging in age from four to 79 years old, choose from 30-plus classes each week. Master Gohring's also has become popular for entire families who learn Kung Fu and Tai Chi together.
"It's not what you get to do. It's what you get to become." Grabhorn says about the process of learning Tai Chi and Kung Fu. "It really adds to people's lives."

Dirty Chai

A spicy, naughty beverage sure to make your toes tingle

My dirty, dirty chai. It's my coffee shop drink of choice and I dropped
an average of $8.00 a day on this ferocious habit before opening my
own coffee shops. Hot chai tea with a shot of espresso. It's the ying
and yang of yummy, spicy latte hotness with a kick to keep me from
slumping in my chair all day.

Joy Gohring (my sister) Enjoying a Dirty Chai at Kick Butt

It's not just the caffiene -- the espresso really lends to/intensifies
the earthy flavors of the chai. It's a perfect winter drink. Why am
I emailing you about this? Because we sold a record number of Soy
Chai Lattes last week. I think an extra Kick is something you should
try that the next time you order our Chai.

Don't confuse Chai Tea with Tai Chi. Here is an amazing 10 year old
"Master"
demonstrating Tai Chi for your clarification.

PS. A dirty chai includes one shot but you can ask for more.
I AM SO CONFIDENT THAT YOU'LL LOVE IT THAT IF YOU DON'T I WILL
BUY YOUR NEXT DRINK. (Just return it with the unused portion and we
will make you any other drink of your choice.)

T from Bee-Sting Sessions, Uncle Bob and Maggie Burt (Hosting Open Mic Thurs.)

Seems like everyone is getting into Tai Chi and Kung fu these days. It is keeping Master Gohring pretty busy so he is getting some help from Uncle Bob. While Uncle Bob is visiting from Gohring's Tai Chi School he will be keeping an eye on Kick Butt Coffee. Uncle Bob has been needing a break from the beating he has been getting anyways. Uncle Bob thnks, Kick Butt Coffee would be a nice change of pace for him.

If you didn't know. Uncle Bob is the Kick Butt Kid's Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Jujitsu and MMA teacher from way back in the day. That is why Master Gohring likes him so much. The Kick Butt Kid, of course, is pictured in our logo. Uncle Bob was happy to see so many people at Kick Butt Coffee. He is making new friends and getting new fans. Uncle Bob keeps telling Master Gohring to get rid of the pop up on this page but Master Gohring just won't listen. Uncle Bob has asked us to tell you that he is now available to you for pictures and to take youtube videos. (He will even let you hit him on Youtube.) But you might prefer simply following him on twitter here. Becoming a fan of his is what you can do on Facebook here. He can't wait to meet you. Visit him at Kick Butt Coffee on Airport Blvd.

Ed McMahon Check, What?

Are you over 25 years old? You will need to be to know what an Ed McMahon check is. The late Ed McMahon was the co-host of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

"HeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrreeeeesssssssJOHNY"...ring a bell?

McMahon also headed up the prize patrol. Showing up with life-sized checks was what he is best known for. We awarded our first "Ed McMahon" this past week (02/08) to Brenna Olson. Check it out:

Brenna Olson (Winner!), Thomas (Master Gohring), Brandy (KBC Manager)

Brenna is a Virgo. Her favorite drink is Kick Butt Iced Mochas. She is addicted to stand-up comedy and goes to Cap City Comedy Club every Saturday. She loves being outside. (I think it is because her parents put outside all the time as a child.) She also loves hiking, especially where there is sun and water - who doesn't and I wish I was there. She works in insurance but her favorite place she wishes to be right now would be on a beach. You don't know who Django and Keiya are; they are her two cats. Photography and charcoal drawings are her hobbies. She stumbled into to Kick Butt Coffee, literally because she is accident prone. Her BFF Emily came with her but didn't fill out a VIP contest card to win $250 worth of gift cards. Can you believe what Emily said, "no one ever wins those things." Brenna, being the smarter of the two, filled one out. ;-) Brenna has never won anything before in her life but something told her this time would be different. Anyways, she is the curious type and wonders what kind of emails Kick Butt Coffee would be sending her. Brenna was excited to learn that we have open mic comedy every Wednesday at 8pm at our Airport Blvd. location (Thursdays at 8pm in the Triangle). Look for her, maybe she will "buy" you a drink.

"I could see myself having fun."

Franchesca and Theron

Do you dream of a job with a flexible schedule, fun co-workers, a healthy environment, and a product you can be proud of? Then Kick Butt Coffee may be the perfect place for you!

Want to know more? Here's what some of the employees at Kick Butt Coffee have to say:

"The thing I enjoy the most about working at Kick Butt is interacting with the customers. I love when customers come in and don't know what they want because then I get to suggest one of my favorite
drinks and watch their faces light up when they try it. I took the job at Kick Butt because the people and atmosphere are great, and because the location was so convenient." -- Jonathan H.

"What I like most is that it's locally owned and that the managers and owners are kind and respectful. I also like that only one person works a shift at a time (usually). I applied because I was a customer who enjoyed it. It seemed like a fun place to work. I took the position because I really liked everyone who worked here and knew Kick Butt Coffee was selling good products." -- Ryan B.

"Love the people I meet and the different bands and events that go on. I always really like the people I work with..THEY ARE AWESOME!!!!! Brandy is a sweetheart and the other employees are cool and the vibe is nice and I could see myself having fun and serving people with smiles and coffee. I took this job because I can go to school and be at home with my son when needed." -- Franchesca S.

If this sounds like what you're looking for, come in to Kick Butt Coffee at 5775 Airport Blvd. and fill out an application. Please also bring your resume and any references.
